Wedding Cake Superstitions and Rituals

The cake symbolises prosperity and good luck, using the highest quality ingredients available it’s meant to ensure a long and happy life together.

Cake cutting
The cake cutting represents the first activity done as a married couple.

Kiss over the cake for a long and happy marriage
In medieval times, wedding guests would stack small cakes as high as possible before they teetered over. The bride and groom would then have to try and kiss over the stack; if successful, it was believed they were guaranteed a lifetime of prosperity. This is where the tiered cake tradition began. Bride and grooms today still have a kiss above the cake when they cut it.

Cake toppers
Cake toppers were first used as recently as the 1950’s. Traditionally a Bride and Groom was chosen for the top of the cake as this represented togetherness. Today’s modern couples often opt for an alternative topper to suit their style.

Feeding the cake to each other
The Bride and Groom feed each other a piece of cake, this symbolises a commitment to provide for one and other and a show of love and affection.

If you want to get married sleep with a piece of the cake under your pillow
It is said that if you place a piece of wedding cake under your pillow, you will dream of your future spouse. This dates back to the 17th century when cakes were traditionally made of fruit it is not recommended with sponge cakes!

The most expensive cake was not a wedding cake!
It is reported that renowned British designer and “caketress” Debbie Wingham created a $75 million cake, often referred to as the Runway Show Cake or the Diamond Cake. It’s value coming from $45 million (4000) real diamonds, including pink, yellow and white stones.
